Why do we use comb grippers in our palletizers?

Jun 21, 2024

The choice of the gripper in a robotic palletizing system is one of the crucial aspects to ensure the proper functioning of the system. This is a critical component in the development of the project, responsible for transferring and positioning the products during the palletizing process.

In the industry, there are various types of grippers: pressure grippers, suction grippers, and comb grippers (bottom grip). In IPLA’s palletizing robots, we always use comb grippers due to the advantages they offer compared to other alternatives. These advantages include versatility, quality, efficiency, safety, and durability. Below is a table detailing the types of boxes that can be palletized with each type of gripper:

Factors to consider in a gripper for palletizing

The comb gripper stands out for its versatility in a robotic palletizing system. Its design allows it to handle various types and sizes of boxes, from 120x120x100 mm to 1200x400x400 mm, ensuring that future changes in the customer’s packaging do not require modifications to the gripper. This is possible due to the bottom and top grip of this type of gripper.

The precise positioning of each box on the pallet is ensured by its design and the presence of a reference plate that guarantees the exact placement of the boxes in their respective positions. This enables orderly and uniform palletizing, ensuring load stability and facilitating handling and transportation.

The comb gripper we use does not require modifications when there is a format change, which maximizes production efficiency. This means there is no need to stop the palletizing process to make adjustments or adaptations to the gripper.

The bottom and top grip provides an additional measure of safety during palletizing, preventing unintended breaking or opening of boxes, provided that the sealing is adequate. This also minimizes the risk of falls or damage to the products throughout the entire process.

The characteristics of the comb gripper translate into great durability of the palletizing system. IPLA’s grippers are designed to be durable and withstand demanding working conditions. Thanks to their robust construction and high-quality materials, they ensure optimal operation over many years, guaranteeing a long-term investment. The machines can work efficiently and adapt to any type of box over an extended period, typically between 15 and 25 years.

When it comes to choosing the ideal solution for palletizing in multiple production lines, two main options arise: a multi-position palletizing cell or several single-line palletizing cells. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages, so it is essential to understand the differences to make the best decision.
